St Wilfrid's Catholic School

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business is for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment in the business sector. The qualification is equivalent to one A Level and aims to provide a coherent introduction to study of the business sectors.

Our course is designed to prepare students for specific careers in business. This means that students can tailor their studies to their career aspirations and gain relevant skills and knowledge along the way in areas such as Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Operations Management.

 

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above.

Content

This BTEC equates to one A Level and has four components:

 

Unit 1: Exploring Business
Unit 2: Developing a Marketing Campaign
Unit 3: Personal and Business Finance
Unit 8: Recruitment and Selection Process

 

In Year One you will study Unit 1, which is a piece of coursework where you will choose a business and carry out in-depth research into the running of the business and write a report on your findings. You will also study Unit 2, which is a controlled assessment where you will be given a scenario prior to the exam which you will have to research and then write a marketing campaign based on your findings.

In Year Two you will study Unit 8, which is a piece of coursework about recruitment and selection. You will get the opportunity to complete job applications and apply for jobs, including a mock interview process. The final unit that you will undertake is an exam where you will learn about basic personal and business finance.

Am I right for the course?

This course is right for you if you have a keen interest in how businesses work and are interested in finding out more. It is a modular course with both coursework and exams, so it would be ideal if you prefer this way of learning. 

Course Highlights

Hands-on Experience:

Students will complete various practical assignments throughout the course, including some mock interviews with professionals and completing a marketing campaign for a business.

Personal Development: Explore and develop your decision-making and organisational skills.
Enrichment:

Students will get the opportunity to visit both local and national businesses, including a trip to Wimbledon to experience a real-life global business.

 

Where Next?

The qualification is equivalent to 1 A Level and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses, which range from Business Studies and International Business Management to more focused ones such as Accounting & Finance, Marketing and Human Resources Management.    The qualification can also support progression to employment directly, or via an Apprenticeship.

  1. Do I need a Level 2 Business qualification?
    This is not a requirement of the course.
  2. Is there a lot of writing?
    Yes, there is a lot of independent coursework that needs to be written up. 
  3. Are there trips?
    We are planning trips to explore both local and national businesses.
