BTEC Travel & Tourism
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Travel & Tourism is for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment in the business sector. The qualification aims to provide a coherent introduction to the study of the business sectors.
This course will give you the foundation for a career in the travel industry. You will study a variety of destinations in the UK and understand the impact tourism has on our nation. You will gain skills in customer service and demonstrate these skills during the unit.

Content
This course equates to one A Level.
It has four units:
Unit One: | The World of Travel & Tourism |
Unit Two: | Globalisation |
Unit Three: | Marketing |
Unit Nine: | Visitor Attractions |
In Year one you will study:
- Unit One which is an exam about all elements of the travel and tourism industry
- Unit Nine which is a piece of coursework where you will undertake in-depth research into two different visitor attractions and write a report based on your findings.
In Year two you will study:
- Unit Two which is a controlled assessment where you will be given two destinations to research and gather information which can be used in a written assessment
- Unit Three which is a piece of coursework about how different tourism businesses market themselves.

Course Highlights
Hands-on Experience: | Students taking travel and tourism are offered the opportunity to take part in virtual work experience with companies such as TUI. Coursework unit three provides students with the opportunity to plan a real-life marketing activity for a local company. |
Personal Development: | Develop and build the skills, contacts and knowledge that will help you to progress your career in travel and tourism. |
Enrichment: | Students will have trips to various visitor attractions, including Wimbledon. |
Where Next?
The qualification is equivalent to 1 A Level and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses, which include International Tourism Management, Event Management, Travel Marketing and Business. The qualification can also support progression to employment directly working for tour operators, travel agency work, managing visitor attractions, working in passenger transport, event management, planning and developing tourism, or via an Apprenticeship.

Whilst this would help, it is not a requirement of the course. - Is there a lot of writing?
Yes, there is a lot of independent coursework that needs to be written up. - Are there trips?
