COMMUNITY
St Wilfrid’s prides itself in being an important link between the education and spiritual growth of the community. The school therefore places strong emphasis in building close ties with its key stakeholders and using its educational and spiritual skills to support this important relationship.
This encompasses areas such as links with local primary schools where we support the positive transition from primary to secondary education. We also work with our partner secondary and special schools using our resources to help enhance their student learning.
Our Adult Education, Family Learning and Community Outreach programmes utilise our specialist subjects ICT, Business Studies and Maths. Courses such as Basic Business Documents, Personal Finance and Introduction to Computing re-skill our community to help them tackle employability challenges and facilitate community learning. A strong emphasis is placed on building relationships with local businesses which will support our Business and Enterprise with Ethics status. This will give our students a chance to experience the real world of work and allow our teaching staff to invigorate their subject. Through this work our Business Partners are able to develop their own staff through continuing professional development.
Our students also lead the community in such initiatives such as Fairtrade and Eco-friendly programmes. As part of St Wilfrid’s Ethics specialism, and its bid to become a Fairtrade and Eco School, students and staff organise community events raising awareness of the importance of these issues. Through fun events such as our upcoming Fairtrade Wine Tasting Evening , we engage with the community on this important issue in a fun and proactive manner.
We are developing strong links with the parishes via the Parish Priest network and developing good communication to build continual opportunities for growth for all members of our Catholic community.
Working with our students and staff we are doing a great deal of charitable work. This can be through fund raising or through supporting the local community with resources to help meet the needs of its most vulnerable.
