Sports Masterclass Wins Students' Approval

The 4th of July was eagerly anticipated by sports students from St Wilfrid’s and local schools Holy Trinity and Thomas Bennett in a joint business day organised by Young Enterprise.  As part of St Wilfrid’s community programme the schools from Crawley were invited to participate in this enterprising day, where Year 10 sports students were tasked with inventing a completely new Olympic event.

First of all, team building exercises included creating an Olympic torch and forming four linked equilateral triangles out sticks and elastic bands – not as easy as it sounds!  The torches were rather flamboyantly designed and would be used later in a teamwork exercise where students had to get them across a newly constructed ‘River Thames’ in the school yard without using their hands…

Meanwhile, teams were working hard on their new game.  Costumes and equipment had to be designed and made up on small models, codes of conduct considered and rules of fair play decided.  Training programmes were worked through whilst the final rules of the new sport were in some cases tested and finalised.

Business Manager Holly Myers was truly impressed with the results of the day, “It’s really hard to come up with a truly original sport, but I’m pleased to say all three schools rose to the challenge.  The teams had a tough schedule, having to work out all aspects of the game and then present to the judges at the end.  I’m proud to say we weren’t let down by the results, and thoroughly enjoyed the day alongside the students.  My sincere thanks to Young Enterprise, who ran the event”.

The winning team was from Holy Trinity Secondary School, who invented water pole-vaulting.  In case you are wondering, this involves pole-vaulting over a super-high beam and performing a dive into the pool afterwards!

Well done to all the teams who took part in this fun and educational day.
