St Wilfrid's Students Gain Sainsbury's Active Kids Get Talking Regional Consultation

A team of St Wilfrid’s students celebrated gaining a National Consultant Status for Sainsbury’s Active Kids Get Talking Campaign in Birmingham last week.  The four students put forward an idea to the campaign on an Advanced Cycle Proficiency course which comprised seven stages which concluded with learning to do jumps and tricks with an additional maintenance course.

The team travelled to Birmingham NEC on Friday 27th June along with 10 other schools.  They had to present their concept to a panel of judges whilst being watched by other delegates.  The students came up with the idea and designed a PowerPoint presentation to show their ideas.

The judges commented, “We were very impressed by the idea. We felt that your students brought the idea alive really well - and potentially they have identified a gap in provision, in a sport that is truly alternative. We felt that the idea was scalable, and innovative, bringing people into the sport where previously there may not have been a clear entry point. We also felt that the idea tackled social issues as well, and could provide a positive alternative in young people's lives, when there are so many negative issues such as gang & knife culture.”

There were congratulated on a great idea with a good presentation that was innovative, scaleable and that could form a part of Active Kids in the future.

The successful students have now been invited to an exciting event on September 22nd where they will pitch their ideas for a Biking Scheme at the Emirates Stadium in London against 18 other regional winners and meet celebrities such as Jamie Oliver and Kelly Holmes along with Sainsbury’s representatives.

The ideas that have been successful in the regional conferences will be put into an Active Kids Manifesto and presented at the National Conference in the week of 15 September 2008.

The students involved in the Active Kids Get Talking Conference are all Year 10 students as follows, Josh Hunt, Kieran Hooper, Matt Gosling and Elliot Benton.  They have also managed to earn St Wilfrid’s 8,500 sports vouchers to provide PE Equipment for St Wilfrid’s.
